If you’re an active cook in the kitchen or a self-proclaimed master chef (like myself), you likely know the importance of counter space. From prep to presentation, counter space places a key role in making your meal a success. I’ve tried every method for clearing up space, and while it was easy to rehome my kitchen utensils and miscellaneous items, I had a hard time finding a new spot for my countertop microwave oven.
This bump in the road led me down a rabbit hole of sleek kitchen designs and maximizing every inch of my kitchen space. Together, we will learn how to optimize our culinary needs – now that’s what I call Simply Better Living!
In addition to dinner, my favorite part of the day is seeing your kitchen designs and favorite recipes. Share your pictures for your chance to be featured by using #SharpHome on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
Can You Install a Microwave in a Kitchen Island?
In short, yes and no – it depends.
A microwave oven, designed exclusively for a kitchen countertop, has vents that are built into the back of the microwave. If installed into a cabinet, these vents will be blocked and unable to release steam from the microwave. Therefore, they should not be installed in a place where these vents are blocked (like a kitchen island or cabinet).
However, if you are looking to clear up counter space, you can install a microwave in a cabinet with the proper precautions. Luckily, there are microwave ovens that can be placed within your cabinetry and kitchen island. The Sharp Stainless Steel Carousel Convection + Microwave Oven (SMC1585BS) can sit on your counters, or with the specified trim kit, can create a seamless, built-in appearance. Other options for a seamless integration include installing a microwave drawer oven.

Here at Sharp, we know the importance of optimizing your space and have some solutions to clear up some valuable real estate in your kitchen (that’s right – your counter). Incorporating a microwave drawer oven allows you to focus on your kitchen’s design and workflow by offering flexible installation options in an island or peninsula or below your wall oven.
With convection cooking capabilities, the Sharp Built-In Smart Convection Microwave Drawer Oven (SMD2499FS) complements your culinary and design needs.
It is better to be safe than sorry in our book, so we recommend leaving your countertop microwave where it belongs. If you love the look of a microwave in an island, consider incorporating a microwave drawer oven or a microwave oven with the supporting trim kit into your kitchen design.
